Can B12 deficiency cause hair loss? It can contribute to it, and it's a connection worth understanding. Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell production, DNA synthesis and healthy nerve function, and because hair follicles are among the most rapidly dividing cells in the body, they're particularly sensitive to any disruption in these processes. Here's what the evidence actually says about B12 and hair.

What B12 does for hair

Healthy hair growth depends on a well-functioning follicle, and that follicle needs two things above all else: oxygen and nutrients delivered consistently through the bloodstream. B12 is central to both.

  • Red blood cell production. B12 is essential for forming healthy red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair follicles. Without sufficient B12, fewer and less effective red blood cells are produced, reducing that supply.
  • DNA synthesis. Hair follicle cells need to divide rapidly and continuously. B12 supports the production of DNA that enables this cell replication. When levels are low, that process slows down.
  • Nutrient metabolism. B12 helps the body metabolise the proteins and other nutrients that keep follicles functioning properly throughout the growth cycle.

How low B12 can show up in hair

Increased shedding or thinning

When the scalp isn't receiving adequate oxygen and the follicle cells can't divide efficiently, hair can enter the resting phase earlier than it should, leading to more shedding and reduced density over time. Research has found associations between low B12 and diffuse hair loss, particularly in pregnant and postpartum women where nutritional demands are higher.

Premature greying

One of the more striking and less commonly known effects of B12 deficiency is its link to premature greying and changes in hair pigmentation. B12 is involved in melanin production, and case studies have documented reversible loss of hair colour in people with severe deficiency. In some cases, correcting B12 levels allowed natural pigmentation to return.

Dull, dry or lacklustre hair

Even before shedding becomes noticeable, low B12 can affect the condition of the hair itself, leaving it looking flat, dry or without its usual shine, as the follicle struggles to sustain full, healthy growth.

An important nuance: The research on B12 and hair loss is more mixed than with iron. Some studies find a clear association; others find no significant difference in B12 levels between people with and without hair loss. What this tells us is that low B12 is unlikely to be the sole cause of shedding for many people, but it can absolutely be a contributing factor, particularly when combined with other deficiencies or health changes. Iron deficiency is the more established nutritional trigger, and the two often travel together.

Who's more at risk of low B12

  • Those following a vegan or plant-based diet, since B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products
  • Vegetarians who don't regularly consume dairy or eggs
  • People over 50, as the ability to absorb B12 from food declines with age
  • Anyone with digestive conditions such as Crohn's disease, coeliac disease or low stomach acid
  • Those taking long-term metformin (commonly prescribed for type 2 diabetes and PCOS), which is known to reduce B12 absorption
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women, due to increased nutritional demand

Good dietary sources of B12

  • Meat and poultry, particularly liver
  • Fish and shellfish, including salmon, sardines and clams
  • Eggs and dairy products
  • Fortified plant milks and breakfast cereals, key sources for those on a plant-based diet

Supplementing B12

Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, B12 is water-soluble, which means the body doesn't store large reserves and excess is excreted rather than accumulating. This generally makes supplementation lower risk, but a blood test is still the right first step, both to confirm a deficiency and to rule out any underlying condition affecting absorption. Some people absorb B12 from tablets poorly and may respond better to sublingual (under the tongue) or injectable forms, which your GP can advise on.

Worth knowing: Taking a B12 supplement when your levels are already adequate is unlikely to improve hair growth. The benefit comes from correcting a deficiency, not from supplementing beyond what the body needs.

How long until you see a difference

As with all nutritionally driven hair changes, recovery takes time. Once B12 levels are restored, the hair cycle needs several months to reset before visible improvement in density or condition becomes noticeable. Greying linked to B12 deficiency may take longer still to show improvement, and results will vary from person to person.
